The Process of Adult Autism Assessments

What to Expect?

Understanding Our Assessment Process

Kaplan Forensic Psychological Services follows a structured, diagnostic assessment process designed to provide clear, thorough, and objective findings using standardized measures accepted in the field of diagnostic assessments for individuals seeking clarification regarding the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our approach ensures KFPS clients are informed at every stage of the assessment process, from initial contact through the final reporting.  The results of your diagnostic report will be reviewed most often via a face-to-face setting during your "feedback session."

What are the main steps involved in the assessment?

The process begins with a comprehensive clinical interview to gather background information followed by psychological testing and clinical observations. After data collection, the data and information obtained is analyzed in a cohesive manner, allowing for ethical preparation of a detailed, comprehensive, accurate, diagnostic report, which includes individually tailored, detailed recommendations based on diagnoses.

How long does the evaluation typically take?

Most assessments take place over the course of two evaluation days. The first assessment day is primarily devoted to the clinical interview, and the second day focuses on completion of psychological testing. Reports are most often completed and scheduled for your feedback session within approximately two to three months after the final date of the evaluation. Any variability, albeit minor, in report completion often depends upon the complexity of the case and the breadth of available collateral information. We prioritize timely communication to keep clients updated throughout their assessment process.

What should clients expect during  evaluation sessions?

Clients can expect a professional and respectful environment where confidentiality is maintained. Sessions involve standardized testing, interviews, and sometimes collateral contacts. Our clinicians explain procedures clearly and address any questions to ensure comfort and understanding.  Client can expect to sign Releases of Information in order to obtain relevant outside records such as academic records or mental health and/or psychiatry, primary care provider (PCP) records.

How are results communicated to clients?

A comprehensive diagnostic report detailing the above information is composed, and provided to the client during their feedback session, which typically lasts anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. The written report will not be a part of the client's permanent medical record because we do not bill insurance. However, if the client discloses our report to their medical providers, it is probable the client's diagnoses will be noted in their medical provider's electronic medical records system. This decision is completely up to the client, as we are bound by strict limits of confidentiality and are therefore unable to disclose any medical information without either a court order or signed release.
